April Mainsheet 2019

April2019

Greetings,

In between snow, rain and sunshine it is great to see everyone down on the dock working on boats. Better days are coming!

We had a great turnout for the Gateway Student’s presentation. Thanks to all who were able to attend. The Architectural and the Environmental Impact classes made the Kenosha Yacht Club and the Kenosha Community Sailing Center their spring class project as they looked at what environmental effects a new building would have where our current one stands. Each Architectural student created their own design for a new building. These students did an amazing job and it was fun to see their creativity and look at their options. We were honored to have then use us as a class project and to share their final results.

Thanks to those who put the ramp in and welcome to the Carthage Sailing Club Students who have been out sailing!

Our boat launch will begin this Saturday and continue through the next few weeks. Please remember that if you have a boat on the dock you need to be there each Saturday to help out. If you do not have a boat on the dock you are still encouraged to come by and help. We need many strong people to do this work and everyone is really appreciated. Helping launch boats counts as your volunteer hours so if you are looking for a way to get your hours in, this is a great opportunity. Don’t forget to sign the volunteer list each week.

Upcoming social events include the Cinco De Derby Party on May 4th which is being help in memory of Dana Fox this year and the 7th Annual Golf Outing on May 19th. Further information on both events and Golf Outing registration can be found on the website. Come on out for both and enjoy a fun time with your boating friends!

On June 2nd we will offer the 61st Blessing of the Fleet. Bring your boat and your family and friends and come on by for this special way to begin our boating season. Some volunteers will be needed for setup and cleanup and both count toward volunteer hours. You can sign up online to help out at the Blessing of the Fleet.

Thanks to the Tall Ships Steering Committee, our plans to be a Tall Ships Sponsor are coming along and we are very excited about this upcoming event August 1 – 4, 2019. It is not too late to sign up as a volunteer for Kenosha Tall Ships. Go to the volunteer section on our website and sign up today to join the 63 who have already made a commitment. If you have questions about volunteering, please contact Sue Hill who is doing a great job of organizing our volunteers. She can be reached attallships.kyc.kcsc@gmail.com. I encourage you to invite your family and friends to join us too. You don’t have to be a member to volunteer to work with us.

Our restaurant will be expanding to spring hours and a new spring menu soon. In the meantime, come on by for Happy Hour and enjoy our Friday Fish Fry too. Watch for further information as we gear up!

Have a great end of April and beginning of May!

Commodore Bob

    • Boat launching will be every Saturday, weather permitting, until the dock is empty.
    • Stop dragging your feet and get ready! Don't get me irritated. We all know the rules. Don't irritate me. If you have a problem call me at 262-945-3994.

      thanks, Doug

  • Sailboat Racing(John Weiss)
    • The April Fools regatta was held Saturday April 6th. This was the first time the KCSC Hartley 12's were used for this event.

Participants were: Patrick Perlman, Ron Otto, Flori Ventura and Paul Wescott. Stan Smith intended to race but he cut open his hand flipping boats requiring a trip to the emergency room and 11 stitches. Winds were 6-8 out of the SSE. Six races were sailed although Doug got preoccupied and only scored five of them. Patrick Perlman narrowly beat Paul Wescott to take the regatta.

Thanks to Jerry Ruffalo for launching his boat and being race committee.

    • Hats off to everybody who attended our Spring race meeting and the awards dinner a few weeks ago. An updated schedule for the 2019 race season is available on our website. A number of modifications have been made to the sailing instructions and we will be leveraging two race committees for the season. Buoys are being readied for deployment before Memorial Day and our first Thursday night race, which is a practice race, will be held the last Thursday of May. So now is the time to get your boat ready!

Please pay attention to the calendar as a number of dates have been changed and this year and we have two Wednesday night races in place of Thursday races, for total of 23 Thursday and Sunday races possible.

I believe we have almost 15 boat already registered. I you haven’t registered, lease do so at

The Poop on Volunteering and Current Volunteer Opportunities

There are three kinds of people: Those who make things happen, those who watch things happen, and those who say, 'what happened?'
-- Casey Stengel

Volunteers are the engine that makes the Yacht Club and Community Sailing Center what they are today and what ‘keeps the lights on’. Board members and others devote countless hours in a variety of ways to support the KYC and the Kenosha Community Sailing Center.

To make volunteering and tracking of hours toward the 12-hour member commitment, we will be working with volunteer leaders to identify and describe volunteer opportunities on the KYC website (so members can view and sign up for once they log in). An email will be sent out once this is activated. Sue Hill volunteered to act as a Volunteer Liaison during this time of transition to a more structured system.

There are many ways to volunteer and support the KYC and KCSC - for now, email the lead for the event or emailkyc.kcsc.volunteer@gmail.com:

Here is a general list - details for special events or requests will come by email:

Take ownership of this event!: KYC-KCSC float in the Civic Parade (6/30)- Theme is “Liberty at the Lake.”
• Volunteer to help (as requested) for special events at the KYC (e.g., May 4 “Dana’s Derby De Mayo” decorating or at the party) - Kathy Otto, Chair, Activities Committee emailmotto0402@gmail.com
Monthly meetings- Attend a KYC monthly membership meeting or KCSC monthly meeting (earn 1hr) - check the event calendar for meeting schedule
• Performclean-uparound the club (either inside or outside) - Dock and KYC-KCSC Clean-Up Day (to prepare for June 2 Blessing of the Fleet) is June 1.
• Garden spruce-up at the KYC grounds
• Instruct or volunteer to support theKCSC youth classes
• Assist withspecial KCSC events(Tuesday night KYC member & KCSC Family sailing class) - (earn 1 hr or more)
• Volunteer for theTall Shipsevent through the KYC-KCSC - Sue Hill, Volunteer Coordinator - email Sue Hill atkyc.kcsc.tallships@gmail.com
• Organize an activity or event - one idea is a Kid’s-themed Pirates Day in advance of the Tall Ships event.
• Use your specific talents to better the club -immediate need for Web Development, Marketing including Social Marketing, and Grant writing skills!

The Kenosha Community Sailing Center is busy preparing for a variety of activities as the sailing season approaches. In addition to finalizing the 2019 catalog for adult and youth classes for print, instructors are

The City of Kenosha has named May “Lake Michigan Safety Awareness Month”

May is National Water Safety Awareness Month and the YMCA-ledKenosha Safety Around Water Coalition(in which the KYC-KCSC participates) is celebrating this designation by holding a poster contest for students in grades K-12 and a water safety event with demonstrations and activities on May 11 at the north end of Harbor Market.

OnMay 11, opening day for the Harbor Market, the KCSC-KYC will have a booth and participate in this event. Volunteers will be needed to staff the booth, and we are also looking for folks to sail the Hartley sailboats in the basin to draw attention to the KYC, and the KCSC classes.

Here’s a link with information on theposter contest. Stay tuned for more information from Bettie Westcott as we get closer to the event.

Letter From The Editor

Ahoy!

OK, I was going to take the gas out of the snowblower last Saturday and then we had 4.5" on Sunday. This Saturday I said, no way will it snow again and drained the machine. So now you can be certain Spring has arrived.
The first boats have been launched and activity around the club is increasing.
Keep an eye on the club's Events Calendar for upcoming activities and get involved.
Sail Shape

Sailor's Dictionary:

"Sail Shape- One of the best ways to improve Sail Shape is to hoist them. Let's get those boats ready and out on the water.

Smooth Sailing -
